Pregnancy refers to the carrying of one or more offspring inside a female’s uterus. Human pregnancy occurs as a result of the female egg being penetrated by the male sperm in a process called fertilizatio6n or conception. Signs of pregnancy include missed menstrual period, implantation bleeding, increased basal body temperature, darkening of the vagina, cervix and vulva, softening of the uterus isthmus, hormonal changes and hyperpigmentation. Pregnancy lasts about 40 weeks from the date of last menstrual period. Childbirth usually occurs about 38 weeks after conception. A normal pregnancy occurs if the baby is delivered within two weeks of the calculated date of delivery.
