This disease occurs as a result of malnutrition when a child is weaned from breast milk. When the diet that replaces that milk is high in carbohydrates and starch but low in protein the child may exhibit a swollen ‘pot belly’, bands of light and dark hair, dermatitis, and/or pigmented skin. Treatment involves adding protein to the diet.
