Is My Cough Due To Allergy or Asthma?

I find that I suffer from a severe irritating cough when I am near perfumes, hair spray or smoke. I find that I am allergic to milk also. My doctor stated that I was suffering from asthma even though I have not been tested for it. I never knew that certain food items will cause an allergy and trigger off asthma. I also find that I have never experienced any breathlessness. I only cough persistently and bring out a lot of mucus. I want to know whether I am suffering from asthma or just an allergy. I would be happy if someone can clear my doubt for me as soon as possible.
