How Does One Get Rid of Cough Effectively?

I take Albuterol and Advair after been diagnosed with asthma. My problem is that I cough continuously when I get a cold. I’m so tired and it takes me months to get rid of it. Does anyone have any suggestion? I do a lot of teaching and public speaking so it’s very embarrassing to leave because of the cough. I really have little detail on how this works since I’m new to this forum.
